The Ultimate Sausage Stuffing
We’re big stuffing fans (or are you team dressing?!) over here, and are so excited to share our very first sausage stuffing! And boy is it DELISH.
We have an amazing cornbread stuffing recipe here on Fit Foodie Finds, but wanted to give you all another savory stuffing option for your holiday meals this year, too.
Sausage Stuffing — What You Need
This sausage stuffing is flavor-packed with primarily pantry staples and easy to find ingredients that come together to make the perfect sausage stuffing to complement your holiday meal.
- Ground Italian sausage — we used a milk variety, but if you like things a little spicer, go for it!
- Large sweet potato
- Yukon gold potatoes
- Yellow onion
- Honey crisp apples — not a veggie, we know! But a delicious sweet and crisp addition to this stuffing, and a great alternative to celery
Herbs and More
- Freshly minced thyme
- Freshly minced rosemary
- Freshly minced sage
- Ground pepper and salt
- Garlic powder
- Olive oil
- Store-bought stuffing (we used Pepperidge Farm)
- Beef broth
- Worcestershire sauce
Sautéed Veggies are Key!
The sautéed veggies bring out such delicious flavors in this dressing, which is why we would not recommend just placing the raw veggies in the casserole dish for baking.
By sautéing the onions, potatoes and Italian sausage before baking, you’re not only starting the cooking process for the veggies and meat, you’re also bringing out all the lovely flavors, which will make this dressing oh so much more flavorful.
Reheating Sausage Stuffing
This stuffing reheats super well! First, add 2-3 tablespoons of broth to a casserole dish and then place dressing in the casserole dish. This will help keep the dressing moist and delicious when reheating.
Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil, and bake at 325ºF for 10-15 minutes or until completely warm (it will take longer to reheat larger quantities of stuffing). This will come in super handy for those leftover Thanksgiving meals 😀
Can you Freeze Sausage Stuffing?
Yes! First allow the stuffing to cool completely, and then place in an air-tight container and store in the freezer. This sausage stuffing will keep for up to 3 months when stored in an air-tight container in the freezer.
When thawing: allow the stuffing to thaw completely before following the reheating instructions above.
- 1 lb. ground mild Italian sausage
- 3.5 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- 1 large sweet potato, cut into half-inch cubes (skin on)
- 2 medium Yukon gold potatoes, cut into half-inch cubes (skin on)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder, divided
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced in half and then thinly sliced
- 2 small honey crisp apples, minced
- 1 tablespoon freshly minced thyme
- 1 tablespoon freshly minced rosemary
- 1 tablespoon freshly minced sage
- 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper
- 12-oz. bag store-bought stuffing (we used Pepperidge Farm)
- 3.5 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons butter, cut into thin pads
- First, preheat oven to 375ºF and spray a 9×13-inch casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- Next, partially brown the Italian sausage over medium/high heat. Cook for about 3-4 minutes or until there is a little pink left. Then, transfer the sausage into the casserole dish.
- In the same pan, add 1.5 tablespoons of olive oil. Add sweet potatoes, Yukon potatoes, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cook for 3-5 minutes to partially cook. Then, transfer potatoes into the casserole dish.
- In the same pan, caramelize your onion. Add 2 more tablespoons of olive oil. Then, add in thinly sliced onion and cook over low/medium heat for 7-10 minutes or until the onions are translucent and caramelized.
- Transfer caramelized onions into the casserole dish and then add apple, fresh herbs, 1/4 teaspoon salt, pepper, and stuffing. Mix everything together.
- Next, mix together beef broth and Worcestershire sauce and then pour the liquid over the stuffing and mix again.
- Finally, place thin pads of butter on top of sausage stuffing and bake at 375ºF for 35-45 minutes, uncovered, until the top is golden brown and it is firm to the touch.
