Worse markers of severity

COVID patients with diabetes present with higher levels of inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein, and worse CT scans of lungs, predicting a more severe course of disease.

More likely to need ICU care

COVID patients with diabetes are more likely to require intensive care, with 22 percent of ICU COVID patients having diabetes, compared to only 10 percent of non-ICU COVID patients.

Higher rates of ventilation

There is a 3.6-fold higher rate of diabetes among COVID patients requiring ICU or the use of mechanical ventilation, or who die, compared to less severe COVID patients.

Higher risk of death

A fasting blood glucose of 7.0 or more when admitted for COVID was associated with a 2.3-fold increased risk of death within 28 days.
